Note: I created this character with the intention of using it to test out a supplement I've been working on. So far there haven't been many testing opportunities, but I've been having a blast playing this character. Also I tried sticking to simple bullet points at first but as the story progressed the entries became more and more complex, so I switched back to using a simple narrative format after a couple of sessions.
Argus Sutton, Callsign: Grudge
Bronze skinned, husky, short-cropped black hair and beard, middle-aged
E 1, H 2, I 3, S 1, W 2
Demolitionist path, Explorer path, Workshop module
Starship: Cast Iron Skull, a strange black mold fills the creases and crevices of the exterior hull, someone graffitied "MURDERER" onto the hull.
I was once a miner on a space station situated on an asteroid. A series of murders involving explosives started happening, which led to rumors spreading that I was the culprit (which was entirely untrue). I used my life savings to purchase a ship and left the station before the mob decided to unjustly sentence me for the crimes. Ever since, I have been living as a freelancer doing odd jobs for whomever will hire me.
Vow: I will find the person responsible for the murders I am accused of and clear my name.
JOURNAL 1
* The stranger made a comment about the graffiti on my ship, decided to remove it at the first opportunity.
(Rolled a miss on vow)
* Returned to Nyx Station to find it under attack by pirates, a mix of gunboats and fighter craft.
* Radioed Basalisk and found her already assisting with the defense, then sized up the situation.
(Miss on Enter the Fray)
* Hesitated too long. Some pirates turned my way and started firing.
* I accelerated, counting on my hull to withstand the hits.
(React under fire, miss with a match, double 10s)
* I didn't notice Basalisk rushing in to assist and rammed right into her. The Cast Iron Skull's hull took some damage and Basalisk started cursing at me over comms.
(Withstand Damage: miss with a match, complication: Transform Legacy)
* I didn't notice at the time but the impact had agitated the mold on my hull causing it to grow.
(Test your relationship: miss)
* I apologized over comms and swore I'd cover the cost of repairs.
(Swear an iron vow: miss)
* I got no response. I would need to figure out how to get her to talk to me after to battle.
* More fire was incoming and I continued pushing forward to get into close range.
(React under fire: Strong hit, +1 momentum)
* I dropped a mine and let inertia speed it into the midst of the pirate fighters.
(Strike: Strong hit with a match, opportunity: Overwhelm Destiny)
* The blast took out two of the fighters and I was just close enough for the heat to burn off some of the growing mold.
* I pulled in closer to one of the gunboats and fired my forward gauss cannons.
(Strike: miss)
* Turrets from the gunboat forced me to turn away. My comms started picking up chatter from the pirates and I could just make out through the distorted encryption that they were likely calling for reinforcements.
(Add tension clock for pirate reinforcements)
* I pushed through again, firing my gauss cannons and hoping my hull could take the incoming hits
(Clash: weak hit)
* My sensors started picking up blips. The pirate reinforcements were already in system.
* I continued my assault.
(Clash: Strong hit)
* My gauss slugs tore into the gunboat's hull and moments later their reactor breached.
[Progress Roll: Assist in defeating or driving off the pirates attacking the station. :Strong Hit = 10 vs 7 | 8]
* The station defenses with Basalisk's help finished off the rest of the pirates. The reinforcements on my sensor screen showed that they were fleeing.
* I took some time to assess the damage to my ship and started making emergency repairs.
(Repair: weak hit. Sacrifice resources -1)
* I managed to repair most of the internal damage but the hull was going to need some extra work.
* I decided to search the pirate wreckage for anything useful.
(Find something useful: weak hit, +1 momentum)
* I managed to salvage some of the fuel pods to top off my ship, then requested clearance with the outpost to dock.
(Will they let me dock? Very likely: no)
(Why not?: Avoid Phenomenon)
* They denied me clearance, saying that they detected a strange mold on my ship's hull and didn't want to contaminate the station. Rather than push the issue, I asked if I could park my ship some distance away and enter through an airlock.
(Is this reasonable? Likely: yes)
* I powered down the Cast Iron Skull and threw on my EVA suit, then disembarked and made my way towards one of the station airlocks.
* The outpost representative, Mina Hendrix, met me at the airlock. She seemed very grateful for my assistance and apologized for not allowing me to dock my ship.
(Make a connection: Strong hit with a match. Opportunity: Deliver Weapon)
* In gratitude, she gifted me a searing dagger, a blade composed of a lightweight metal which glowed white hot when powered on.
* I asked if I might be able to stay a short while to make repairs and resupply my ship.
(Sojourn: weak hit)
* She told me their supplies were strained, but I could stay as long as I needed to make repairs.
* After making my repairs, I tracked Mina down and I asked her if I could get some assistance removing paint from a hull.
(Compel: Strong hit, +1 momentum, mark progress on vow)
* She had someone in mind who had some equipment that could help. The lackey followed me out the airlock and I hoped that they wouldn't be put off by the graffiti's implication. I tried to reassure them that it was the result of a misunderstanding.
(Face Danger: weak hit)
* They didn't seem convinced, but for some reason helped me remove it anyway. Every time they looked at me it was a look of judgement.
(Endure Stress -1: weak hit, -1 momentum, +1 spirit)
* The equipment they were using faded the paint somewhat but didn't seem to get the job done. I examined the paint closely to try to see why it was being so stubborn.
(Gather Information: weak hit, +1 momentum)
* It seemed that the paint was resistant while it was still in a vacuum. I needed to get my ship in a pressurized environment to get it off.
(Mark progress on vow)
* I asked him if he would allow me to borrow his equipment for a few days.
(Compel: Strong hit, +1 momentum, mark progress on vow)
* He didn't seem to care, still giving me that judgemental look but wanting to be helpful. He said when I returned to ask for Blake and he'd come by to retrieve the equipment.
* Before leaving, I tracked down Basalisk who was prepping her ship to leave. She had repaired some of the damage I had caused but still wasn't talking to me. I tried to apologize and promised I would make it up to her.
(Compel: burning momentum, weak hit. Counteroffer: Debate Language)
* She was still upset with me, but told me if I apologized again in a few days maybe she'd be more agreeable.
* I boarded my ship and began scanning for any planets in the system with a decent atmosphere.
* I discovered a planet with thick jungles, which registered in my database as Celadon.
* I set a course for the planet, engaging the autopilot, and went back to my bunk for a smoke break.
(Set a course: weak hit, complication: Threaten Danger)
* As I approached the planet I was hailed by the planet authorities and warned not to attempt any landing on Celadon or I would be met with deadly force. I tried to convince them that I just needed to land to make repairs and wouldn't be landing near any settlements.
(Compel: Strong hit, +1 momentum)
* After some back and forth I persuaded them to let me land but they let me know that they would be monitoring me closely.
* I thought about scanning the surface before I made my descent, but I didn't want to risk antagonizing anyone. The entire planet was covered in thick clouds, so I would have to roll the dice on landing somewhere safe.
(Do I encounter any obstacles as I try to land? Likely: yes)
(Life is revealed or takes an unexpected form. Constructed Illusion)
* As I descended and approached the cloud tops, I noticed that some parts of the clouds looked a little odd. I risked running a scan and discovered that parts of it weren't cloud at all but solid surfaces that blended in with the clouds.
(Face Danger: Strong hit, +1 momentum)
* Just in time I maneuvered around one of these structures and as I breached the clouds I saw that the solid structures were the tops of some kind of huge flowery plant.
* Eventually I found a way through the dense canopy and landed without further issue. Rain was pouring down and the thick clouds left everything in perpetual twilight. I didn't want to stay here any longer than necessary so I disembarked and set to clearing away the rest of the graffiti.
(Mark progress on vow. Fulfill your vow: Strong hit)
* Sure enough, a pressurized environment made removing the rest of the paint much easier.
* With that out of the way, I took a few minutes to look around for anything useful.
(Find something useful: miss)
* I ended up getting entangled in some thorny vines and scratched myself up pretty good.
(Endure harm -1: strong hit, +1 health)
* The scratches were only superficial, but I took the hint and decided not to waste any more time. I boarded my ship and left the strange, rain-soaked world behind. The planet authorities notified me that my presence had been logged. I thanked them and continued on my way.
